Enhanced 9-1-1

What is Enhanced 9-1-1?

When you dial 911 from a mobile device, your call is directed to the emergency operator for your area*. Most calls will be connected to an upgraded or enhanced 9-1-1 facility.

Enhanced 9-1-1 (e9-1-1), is available in most coverage areas of British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia.

Your call is directed to the emergency 9-1-1 operator determined by the cell tower handling your call. Operators automatically receive your mobile phone number & area code. Using GPS, e9-1-1 operators are able to more accurately locate a newer device, such as any that were purchased from Hay Communications.

*9-1-1 call centres may not exist in all areas. You may need to dial alternate numbers to directly reach local police, fire and/or ambulance services. Contact local emergency operators listed in a phone directory to find out the availability of 911 services in your area. Do not dial 911 for this information.

Enhanced 9-1-1 with GPS locating equipment may also not be available where an emergency happens. Be prepared at all times by following the TIPS on the other side of this flyer.

Tips you should know…

When Dialing 9-1-1 from a mobile phone:

  • Always give the operator the cellular number you are calling from, including area code.
  • Tell the operator your location or the location of the emergency.
  • Stay on the line with the operator and do not hang up until told to do so.
(customers are not billed for airtime for 9-1-1 calls.)
  • Leave your phone turned on after hanging up in case the operator needs to call you back.
Did You Know?
  • 9-1-1 can be dialed from a locked device. “Emergency call” is available from the password screen.
  • A phone does not need to have an active account to allow 9-1-1 calls. It only needs to be charged.
  • To help reduce the chance of unintended or accidental calls to the emergency service do not program 9-1-1 in your cell phone.
Limitations of 9-1-1
Like any call from a mobile device, signal strength may affect your connection to a 911 operator.

If you purchased your device through a provider other than Hay Communications your cell phone may not provide emergency operators with enhanced information.

Text messaging to 9-1-1 will NOT connect you to emergency operators.

Data only devices, such as turbo sticks, that cannot make voice calls cannot connect you with a 911 operator.
